Chief Minister of Maharashtra Ashok Chavan has directed the water supply and sanitation department to chalk out a plan for pay-and-use toilets at regular intervals on highways and public places. The direction issued by the ministry has also notified the construction of toilets at all establishments, shopping centres, industrial colonies, petrol pumps as compulsory while giving them permission. ST stands, railway station and toll nakas will be included in the scheme.

The responsibility of keeping the existing public toilets clean will be handled by the department concerned. Officials said 40% of the population lives in urban areas and only 60% have toilet facility. The facility to the rest will be made available in three years.
