One of the oldest known metalwork manufacturing processes where metal is pressed, pounded or squeezed under great pressure and heated into high strength parts is forgings. The domestic automotive sector and outsourcing have been the key drivers of growth for the forging industry in India with consistent increase in production, capacity utilization and exports. With the booming auto component industry with forging exports projected to touch US$5 billion (which is about 15% of the auto component exports) by 2015, the demand for forgings is expected to be at least 16% per annum. The forging industry is largely growing around automotive industry which is mainly concentrated in West as well as South India. But how are forging manufacturers maintaining the production premises? The Indian automobile industry, ranked seventh largest in the world today, owes its growth to the increased presence of world auto giants who have ventured into this flourishing market. Further, with sourcing parts from India being 10-20% cheaper for US auto makers and about 50% cheaper for their European counterparts, over the decade, several car companies are investing in India. This includes the US automakers General Motors and Ford, Germany's BMW and DaimlerChrysler AG, France's Renault, Japan's Suzuki, Toyota and Honda and South Korea's Hyundai. Along side this growth, the automotive and ancillary units have made tremendous progress, to the extent that India has become an attractive outsourcing destination for global auto companies because of its strong engineering skills and low costs. With international companies having set shop in India, the necessity for mechanised cleaning in each of the segments of this industry --- automobile, ancillary, filling stations and workshops --- has grown appreciably. Mohana M speaks to various manufacturers, dealers and service providers to understand the increasing requirement of mechanised cleaning in the automotive industry.
In the last couple of years, high tech washrooms with self rotating sanitized toilet seats, sensor based lighting systems, luxurious self-cleaning combination toilet bidet that warms up when in use, remote controlled hand-free motion sensor operations, music and built-in speakers have created waves world over. While many are awe-inspired by the improved washroom luxury, the pressing need for hygienic washrooms has led many others to adopt best practices which make a Smart Washroom possible. In a series, starting from this issue, CIJ will be carrying articles on what go into making a Smart Washroom. Smart washrooms are designed to meet the customer needs, says Matthew Wonnacott, Marketing Manager, Vectair Systems Inc. Such washrooms are a unique experience for the user. Having an automatic fragrance dispenser that only disperses a fragrance in a time interval that best meets the facilities ‘traffic’ would be considered smart – or a fully automated hand dryer that users do not have to touch to function, thus reducing the bacteria spreading to different surfaces is smart. Concisely put, “these washrooms are built with the latest technologies and are independent of manual intervention for maximum applications”, says Kartik Iyengar, Marketing Manager - Fabric Care & Personal Care, South Asia, Diversey India Pvt Ltd. Sensor based urinals or toilets which senses human presence and activates the flushing system, aesthetic looking tissue paper for face, hands & toilet, feminine hygiene bin for sanitary waste disposal, liquid hand wash dispensers with accurate dosing system, hand dryers… all make smart washrooms. The January issue of Clean India Journal discussed at length the increased efficiency mechanised cleaning can bring both in terms of cost and the cleaning results. While building service contractors and Facility Management companies are putting equipment and chemicals to optimum use in maintaining various facilities, Railways, Airports and Highways are also experiencing the benefits of mechanisation. CIJ had earlier covered the cleaning system adopted by the Southern Railways. This time, the focus is on the Central Railway. During a visit to the Central Railway offices in Mumbai and also to one of the Railway yards, CIJ’s Mohana found that within six months of adopting mechanisation in coach cleaning, the results seem very encouraging.
The more traffic a facility receives, the more the number of visit to the restrooms, and the more the need to maintain these. Quality of products installed, odour, lack of ventilation and appearance – paper towels left on the floor, leaking soap dispensers, etc. – leave facility managers spending a great deal of effort on restroom maintenance. But, the right chemicals and procedure of cleaning with precaution can give the desired results.
Contract cleaning business has increased manifold in India over the last five years. With that the demand for cleaning equipment of different types and sizes, to suit the nature of the cleaning or maintenance work. Cleaning can be especially difficult in large airports, railways & bus stations, hospitals, food manufacturing plants, restaurants, retail stores, schools and numerous industrial facilities and sites. Cleaning service contractors need to know how to identify the category of equipment required and also then to pick up the right one from the entire range available with the equipment supplier. Cleaning equipment are expensive and the important thing is to get the best result with limited investment. Clean India Journal requested a few equipment suppliers to throw light on the criteria to select the commonly used cleaning machines.
In July this year, the Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI) made plans to assist setting up around 350 food processing units in the next 100 days under its flagship programme called Evergreen Revolution and to invest one trillion rupees ($20 billion) by 2015 to create nearly 10 million new jobs in this sector. In the next five years, this industry is likely to treble increasing its global share to 3%. The processing units will be set up for food items like meat, diary, fruit & vegetables, grains and fish. India’s potential to garner a higher share in world food trade has also led to increasing recognition and adoption of food safety measures. The Food Safety and Quality Year 2008-09 that began last October with various integrated schemes and programmes launched by the Ministry is a take off point for this industry. The Eleventh Plan allocation for the Ministry has been increased by about six times, from Rs.650 crore in the Tenth Plan to Rs.4031 crore in the current plan. The thrust areas identified for strategic interventions in the 11th Plan primarily include establishment of mega food parks; creation of integrated cold chain infrastructure at different levels, farm level primary processing center-cum-cold chains; establishment of collection/ aggregation centres and strategic distribution centres; capacity building by setting up of National Institute of Technology, Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM) and establishment/ upgradation of quality control laboratories. On an average, each unit would require cleaning equipment like scrubber driers and high pressure jets, besides, other small machines, chemicals and tools. Considering the 100-day action plan of the government, if 350 food processing units come up as scheduled, the cleaning industry would find an instant market for multiple equipment in the next three months. Some of the most popular sectors in the food processing industry at the farm level, including ice creams, jam, ketchup and spices, are looking at improving their cleaning standards and obtaining certification to join the premier league. Clean India Journal’s Mohana experienced the extremes of cold ice creams and hot spices touring some of the processing units recently.
It’s quite disheartening that in India, the general perception on standards, in terms of food security, management and cleanliness, is much lower than in the First World nations. Johnson Thomas, Clean India Journal’s special correspondent, set out to explore the varying standards of hygiene and cleanliness in a few food chain outlets. The financial capital of the country, Mumbai, expected to have the best standards, seemed like an ideal place to carry out the investigation.
The Indian Railways had been the much-preferred and cheaper means of transportation for the people until a few years ago, when low cost airlines started chewing into the profits of the former with the upper middle class and middle class passengers opting for the latter.
