Green project for Rameswaram Temple island

Vivekananda Kendra under its Natural Resources Development Project (Nardep) will implement Project Rameswaram, a comprehensive & ambitious green project aimed at providing a green and hygienic pilgrimage to about 1.2 crore people.

As part of the project 500 tree saplings were distributed to the pilgrims by Dr APJ Abdul Kalam at the inauguration of the project. According to the Vivekananda Kendra officials, this will make Rameswaram a greenest hygienic pilgrimage in South India.

Commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, the Kendra had renovated the theerthams, the venerated water bodies in the island. The renovation and maintenance of the theerthams was integrally connected to the island itself being made clean and green; a host of other areas yet to be renovated such as solid waste management and greening through tree planting.
