Going Green

Pune is witnessing a sharp increase in the number of environment-conscious builders as well as individuals. Light-emitting diode (LED) lights are being tried out to save electricity and garbage collected daily from apartment buildings are converted into manure for roof-top gardening.

The Pune Municipal Corporation is encouraging citizens to take up environment-friendly measures, including solar, vermi-composting and rainwater harvesting by giving a tax reduction of 5-10%. According to the PMC, the number of people availing tax benefits for green practices has increased 10-fold in three years. Nearly 1265 property owners and builders opted for the green tax benefit in 2007-08, 3430 in 2008-09, 7921 in 2009-10 and 12003 in 2010-11.
