The Department of Information Technology and Electronics, Government of West Bengal, has initiated the process of setting up an e-waste management and processing unit in an adjoining district of Kolkata. A survey conducted by West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) in 2010 to analyse the extent of the generation of electrical and electronic waste revealed that the estimated generation of both electrical and electronic waste in 2009 was 26,000 tonnes in the Kolkata Metropolitan area. This was projected to reach 1.50 lakh tonnes a year by 2020.
