FROM THE EDITOR
While doing this month’s main story, what came across strongly was that in spite of the reasonable amount of awareness about the need for mechanised cleaning, many of the contracting companies and end-user companies were not ready for a total transition. For one, the initial investment on machines is high and many routine maintenance jobs could be handled with manual labour.
A judicial mix of man and machine is found acceptable globally. It has also become necessary to follow the approach of workloading to determine the number of staff required to maintain a facility and from this, the cost of cleaning. With more manpower deployment, it is important to evaluate the equipment and how its use can make cleaners more efficient. Workloading begins with gathering data.
“There are many variables that determine staffing levels, from the building’s size, its finishes and traffic patterns to available equipment. This data is critical in determining how many square feet each janitor cleans. And that’s a rupee figure every housekeeping manager should have at his fingertips,” said the head of a housekeeping company. “Workloading software is increasingly used by companies in the West. With this, we can assess the staffing and equipment needs. The software can also be used to show the cost-saving benefits of purchasing new equipment.”
The Indian Cleaning industry foresees an increased growth, especially in housekeeping sector, in the coming years. Increased professionalism can accelerate the growth and help raise the standards. With accurate information and data in hand, the contracting company can educate the client companies on how budget cuts affect the maintenance of a facility or investment in an expensive equipment can pay for itself with increased efficiency.
As the New Year comes in with hopes, we at Clean India Journal are also a saddened lot at the news of the retirement of Roots Multiclean’s Manging Director MK Vijayasankar. Ever since the inception of the magazine, Vijayasankar has been a guiding force, always ready to offer suggestions and industry related facts and analysis. He has always made himself available for all the Indian Cleaning industry meetings and has led the discussions and debates. We will miss you, Sir. The Clean India Journal team wishes you very many fruitful days ahead and looks forward to your continued support.
