Human waste to light up bio-toilets
Scientists of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) have found a novel way of lighting up bio-toilets using Methane gas generated from human waste. DRDO is now working to provide lighting solution for the convenience of those who will use bio-toilets in darkness.
“We are finding out the means to do it as the rate of production of methane gas will be very small and it will be difficult to concentrate it at one place,” DRDO’s head of research and development Dr W Selvamurthy has said. Bio-toilets use bio-digester technology wherein a bacteria feeds upon the faecal matter inside the septic tank, through anaerobic process which finally degrades the matter and releases methane gas and water. The water can be used for irrigation, which has been successfully demonstrated by cultivating vegetables and have been found safe even for animals.

Bio-Digester Technology is very good indeed and it needs to be spread in rural areas where sewerage treatment facilities are not available. awareness programme should be launched to educate people about the technology. I myself have used the technology in a basement toilet.

Bio-Digester technology brought about as a source of renewable energy is appreciable and remarkable indeed. Since this technology is successfully tested by DRDO being a government body, the information of the same may be diffused among general public. The information on this technology may be announced to the masses through TV channels radio etc.
In the face of water/power crisis, this technology shall be a boon to the common man.
Govt.of India may offer subsidy for the general public to instal this unit in every residence (if independent house/villa) or a big unit in residential apartments/big buildings/schools/hospitals. Through this technology, we would reduce our dependence on power supply through grid and to a great extent get ourselves relieved from water shortage.
I wish that this technology may be brought to the use of public shortly.
This is a very clever concept to collect the biogas for lighting the toilets and it is to me surprising that more people have not thought of this before.
Thanks.
