FROM THE EDITOR
The period of March 22 to 28 has been the World Water Week, a reminder that water enables life. Clean water promotes good health, enables people to work, and gives a feeling of liberation. It is a cornerstone of development. Currently, 900 million people around the world lack access to clean and safe water. Thousands of children die every day from preventable illnesses caused by dirty drinking water. Many more people are affected by painful and disfiguring diseases caused by waterborne parasites and bacteria. In 1992, the United Nations General Assembly declared March 22 of each year as World Water Day. Countries are invited to devote the day to the conservation and development of water resources. This year the theme has been “shared water- shared opportunities.” Closer home, we need a lot of conservation and sharing of water.
This issue of Clean India Journal has this poignant account of how people in an island village in West Bengal are suffering because of lack of drinking water and too much water during the monsoon season. Women and children are the most affected. The writer says, the village women have given up hope.
As part of its objectives, CIJ facilitated the coming together of Indian cleaning industry early this month. It was agreed that this was the appropriate time to take stock of the direction the industry should be taking. There are positive and negative trends. But, the challenge is in leveraging the advantages to fight the problems to arrive at a common goal. The ball has started rolling........ |
